CHM 6935: DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR
The purpose of the departmental seminar is to introduce our graduate
students to current research topics of great interest. The speakers are
typically outstanding researchers, excellent speakers, and will
introduce you to particularly hot research topics. We have at least
twelve meetings per semester that are obligatory. We recognize that
there are inevitable conflicts for some of our graduate students.
Hence, we only expect two-thirds attendance, ie 8/12 of the mandatory
meetings to get one semesters’ credit, and 16/24 for two
semesters. All graduate students in chemistry are expected to fulfill
this requirement for two semesters. In the event the requirement is not
met after two semesters, the student must continue to attend until it
is. Hence, attending 6/12 meetings one semester reduces the obligation
for the next semester, as does attending all 12 meetings.
Seminar schedule (Fall 2008):
This schedule lists all seminars of which we are aware that will be
presented by a visitor to UF. Only a subset of these are designated as
departmental seminars. Those, and those alone, are mandatory for CHM
6935. You are obligated to attend CHM 6935 seminars even when
divisional seminars (unless co-listed by both the division and the
departmental seminar program), group meetings, etc. conflict. Proof of
attendance is the sign-up sheet provided at each of the departmental
seminars, plus other requirements we might impose.
The departmental seminars can be on any day of the week, or even at
night. The normal seminar schedule for the department has inorganic on
Monday, Physical on Tuesday, QTP and Analytical on Wednesday, Organic
on Thursday, and Bio on Fridays. A selection of these will be
designated, ‘departmental,’ to represent all divisions, and
to hear from our most prominent visitors. Most of these departmental
seminars will be in Leigh 207. (As Leigh 207 has only 65 seats, please
arrive early). Some will be in CLB 130. Leigh 309 is also a back-up
room for departmental seminars. In some cases, even other rooms might
be used. It is the students’ responsibility to review the
schedule regularly for changes during the course of the semester. This
pertains to room numbers and speakers, which will be adjusted if there
is a cancellation, change of schedule, or late addition. All of which
occur! When we have a Distinguished Visiting Professor here for two or
three lectures, we will include these among the mandatory departmental
seminars.
When you have questions about this course, please contact Ms. Coralu
Clements at clements@qtp.ufl.edu. She tracks attendance.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT 6935:
1. All departmental seminars are on Friday. They will be any day of the
week usually coinciding with that for the sponsoring division.
2. Once you get an S in CHM 6935 you have a semester’s credit. We
keep track of your attendance over several semesters if need be, but
the University in its wisdom will not let us give I’s or
H’s for this course, so everyone registered gets an S, deserved
or not. But you do not satisfy the requirement until you meet our
in-house count.
3. You have to be officially registered for the course. You can obtain
credit toward this requirement by attendance, signing the sheet, and
fulfilling whatever other requirements we might impose without official
registration.
4. All seminars on our schedule are departmental so attendance at those
counts. Departmental seminars are only those clearly marked
DEPARTMENTAL. |
