Physical Chemistry, 8th (or 7th) Edition (Required)
Prerequisites: CHM 4411, MAC 2313
Objective: CHM 4412 constitutes the second semester of the two term sequence of Physical Chemistry, CHM 4411–4412, covering quantum mechanics in relation to atomic and molecular electronic structure and spectroscopy. The objective is the mastery of basic principles, numerical techniques and chemical applications of quantum mechanics, the molecular point-group symmetry, and the theory of rotation, vibration, and electronic spectroscopies.
Expectation: CHM 4412 has been felt by many students to be a very difficult course because of its heavy use of calculus (partial differential equations) and algebra (matrix eigenvalue problems). It is also a critically important subject as the fundamental physical theory of chemistry along with (statistical) thermodynamics. Students are expected to be thoroughly committed and dedicated to the course to achieve the aforementioned objective (spending at least a few hours everyday and the whole one weekend day outside this class). Students are expected to attend class regularly. Class attendance will be checked randomly. Students are expected to avoid class conversations, cell phone uses, pets, or late arrivals.

Holidays: Homecoming (Nov 2), Thanksgiving (Nov 22–23).
Exams: There will be three mid-term exams during the normal class period and at the normal class room on Sep 25, Oct 24, and Dec 5. Each exam will total 100 points (300 points in total).
Homework: Each week, reading and homework assignment will be made from the textbook and elsewhere (12 such assignments are planned). Written solutions to the homework problems must be submitted to the instructor. They will total 120 points. No late submission is accepted.
In-Class Quizzes: Each week, an in-class quiz will be given and a written solution must be submitted during the class. The total score from the quizzes is 80 points.
Final Exam: There is no final exam.
Grades: The total available points will be 500 (three exams 300 + homework 120 + in-class quizzes 80). Grade A will be given to a score 400 – 500 (80 – 100 %); B+ to 375 – 399 (75 – 80%); B to 350 – 374 (70 – 75%); C+ to 325 – 349 (65 – 70 %); C to 300 – 324 (60 – 65 %); D to 250 – 299 (50 – 60 %).
Honor Code: Students, faculty, and all participants of UF’s academic activities are bound by an Honor Code (see http://itl.chem.ufl.edu/honor.html).
Other information: Students with disability may request special classroom and other facilities through the Dean of Students. Counseling services are available through several UF organizations.
