Documentation and user guides for general computing

  • Set up e-mail client correctly on your Windows or Mac laptop or desktop so that you can access the QTP mail server from anywhere in the world using secure IMAP and SMTP.
  • Configure laptops and desktops inside the New Physics Building to:
    1. You must first register the MAC address of your computer, desktop or laptop, by filling out the online form. Typically the registration will complete in one hour.
WARNING Make sure that your computer is not registered with both the Physics Department computing services and the Slater Computing Laboratory. If it is your computer will behave very erratically.
    2. connect to the QTP network and access the Slater Lab server disks using SAMBA. This page also shows how to configure DHCP and X-Windows for Windows.
    3. print to the Slater Lab printers using SAMBA.
    4. Note that the SAMBA password is a separate password in teh QTP network configurations. It is best to keep it the same as the UNIX password. This is done with the smbpasswd command on CRUNCH.
More details about the network architecture in the Physics building is given in the section on Slater Lab Network Architecture.
  • Find University of Florida compliant letterhead templates for Microsoft Word and compatible software.
  • To avoid losing data and to get good performance it is important to follow the instructions for correct use of diskspace.
  • Learn how to make a poster and print it on the Slater Lab poster printer.
  • Connect from laptops and desktops to the Windows 2000 servers using the RDP protocol.
These servers will be turned off in the Fall 2009.
