Authentication and authorization

Password policy

The username for all QTP accounts is the user's last name. If there is a conflict with an existing account some change to the username is made. First the first letter of the First name is added. Other changes can be made as well. The e-mail of last_name at qtp.ufl.edu always works, independent of the actual username of the account.

The password must be at least 6 characters and at most 8 characters in length. A good password consists of letters and digits and special characters "!@#$%^&*()_|". There must be at least some lowercase and some uppercase characters, and at least one digit or special character.

Passwords must be changed once every year.

All passwords are checked at random times. If the password is cracked by the checker program, the account is locked immediately. The user will then have to see the system administrator and get a lesson on passwords management.

Try to make a password that is easy to remember. A good rule is to abbreviate a sentence that you can easily remember. For example, take the sentence

Biological computing at QTP!

becomes
Bio@QTP!

which is a very good password.

Do not write down your password in any visible place, like a sticky on your screen. Put the paper in a secure place. Do not write the username down together with the password, but some other indication that allows you to remember what account the password is for.

Account creation and retention policy

Authorization to use the John C Slater Computing and Visualization Laboratory comes with the creation of an account. The account is identified by a unique username and password pair. The account is given to individuals only. The following lists the types of account, which is equivalent to the reason for their creation and uniquely identifies the source of funding used to pay the charges accrued by the account. Note that these accounts are distinct from the UF GatorLink accounts. There is no relationship of trust between the two sets of accounts. For example to access PeopleSoft functions, one must use the GatorLink account.
  1. QTP member account Every person employed by the University of Florida to work in QTP is entitled to an account. This includes, faculty, staff, student assistents, post doctoral associates, graduate students, undergraduate students, and visiting scientists. These accounts are locked and deleted when employment ceases.
  2. QTP research associate account Many members in QTP are involved in extensive and long lasting research collaborations. As long as a research collaboration is active, researchers can obtain an account under the sponsorship of a QTP faculty member. The account will be monitored and if it is found to be inactive or if irresponsible behavior is detected with the account, it will be locked immediately and deleted.
  3. QTP class account A set of accounts exists to allow access to students taking a class taught by a member of QTP. These accounts get username and password pairs assignbed to each student. All data in the account ar remove and the password is reset at the end of the semester.
All user accounts are reviewed every semester and stale accounts are locked and deleted. As a courtesy, the data in the account will be backed up and kept for 6 months.
